What this calculator does

A sleep cycle calculator estimates bedtime or wake-up options in complete 90-minute cycles so you are less likely to wake in the middle of deep sleep. It adds a short buffer for the time it takes to fall asleep and shows several schedule choices.

Formula

Bedtime = Wake time − (Cycles × 90 min) − Sleep latency
Wake time = Bedtime + Sleep latency + (Cycles × 90 min)

Worked example

Wake at 6:30 AM, 5 cycles × 90 min = 7 h 30 min, plus 15 min to fall asleep → suggested bedtime 10:45 PM.

Assumptions

  • Average adult sleep cycle length of about 90 minutes.
  • Same cycle length across the night (a simplification).
  • You fall asleep within the stated latency window.

Limitations

  • Cycle length varies between individuals and across the night.
  • This tool does not measure your actual sleep stages.
  • Not intended for clinical sleep-disorder assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How long is one sleep cycle?

About 90 minutes on average for adults, though it can range from roughly 70 to 120 minutes and often lengthens later in the night.

Is it better to wake between cycles?

Many people feel more refreshed when they wake near the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of deep sleep. It is a helpful planning idea, not a guarantee.

How many cycles do I need?

Most adults do well with 5 or 6 complete cycles per night, corresponding to roughly 7.5–9 hours of sleep.
