What this calculator does

A sleep debt calculator estimates the difference between the sleep you needed and the sleep you actually got across recent nights. Small differences are common; larger recurring gaps may affect mood, focus and health.

Formula

Sleep debt ≈ (Target sleep per night − Actual sleep per night) × Days

Worked example

Target 8 h × 7 nights = 56 h. Actual 7 h × 7 = 49 h. Estimated debt = 7 h.

Assumptions

  • Your personal target reflects your typical need.
  • Actual sleep represents time asleep, not just time in bed.

Limitations

  • Cannot 'catch up' fully by sleeping in on weekends.
  • Chronic short sleep may need professional evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I catch up on sleep?

You can partially recover short-term deficits, but consistent nightly sleep is more effective than long weekend sleep-ins.

How much sleep debt is a problem?

There is no universal threshold. Persistent daytime sleepiness, mood changes or difficulty concentrating are more meaningful signals.
